5 Ways to Increase Your Willpower!

You start out with the best intentions (diet! exercise! stay on budget!). But, all too soon, your resolve starts to wane and a cheeseburger renders you powerless. Or not. The following five strategies will help you hold your ground--no matter what temptations are luring you in the opposite direction.

1. Eat a turkey sandwich - On average, we spend four hours each day actively resisting things we desire. Every time we refuse to succumb--say, by washing the dishes before watching TV or by holding our temper--our bodies draw on our store of glucose, which carries energy to the muscles and brain. When our glucose levels get low, our will-power weakens. To keep it high, eat regular meals that are full of protein and good carbohydrates, like a sandwich of lean meat and cheese packed between two slices of whole-wheat bread. 2. Anticipate roadblocks - When you start pursuing a goal, consider what might interfere with your plans. Always assume that glitches will come up and that your motivation may falter when they do. So, in the meantime, when you look at your running shoes, you could think, "I'm going jogging because I want the prize that is waiting for me when I finish my workout". 1) Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) is one of just four companies that carry a AAA grade on its debt. The company offers a 3.6% yield and has been very reliable--it's made steady payments since 1944 and has increased its dividend annually for the last 49 years. I think the company can accelerate its earnings growth over the next few years thanks to breakthroughs from its biopharmaceutical businesses. The company's pipeline includes potential new treatments for Alzheimer's disease, prostate cancer, hepatitis C, and a stroke prevention medicine. In our view, shares do not fully reflect the value of J&J's pipeline potential, and as a result we believe shares are attractively valued. Meanwhile, J&J should be affected less and less by major patent expirations on earlier products. Stock Price: $64.36 - Dividend Yield: 3.6%

2) AT&T (T) pays a 5.8% dividend. The telecommunications giant had made payouts since 1984 and has increased dividends steadily over the last 26 years, if completed, AT&T's merger with T-Mobil USA will make it No. 1 wireless operator in the U.S.(At press time, the U.S. Justice Department filed an antitrust lawsuit to block the proposed acquisition) The union should bring about operating savings that will fully offset the purchase price. Over the past 5 years, AT&T has grown its dividend about 5% per year on average. We expect a 2% growth rate in the next five years. We expect a 2% growth in a stabilizing economy thanks to AT&T's wireless and television businesses. Stock Price: $28.79 - Dividend Yield: 5.8%

3) Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (KMP) which operates oil and gas pipelines and storage facilities, pays a 6.6% dividend yield. Kinder Morgan has some 28,000 miles of pipelines used to transport natural gas and refined oil. The company has paid a dividend since 1992 and has increased its payout to investors the last 14 years running. We think Kinder Morgan can generate low double-digit income earnings growth this year, reflecting acquisitions and increased demand for storage capacity. For the past decade this dividend stock has delivered annualized total returns of 19.5%. What's more: A $10,000 investment in Kinder Morgan 20 years ago would be worth $190,000 today. In the next year, the company plans to build up its energy transportation and storage assets--one reason we think it is insulated from any decrease in oil or gas prices.

You don't need as long as you think to get your financial life in order. Just squeeze in these 12 easy moves--some of which take a mere 15 minutes to tackle.

With longer work days complicating the already Herculean task of juggling job and family, you probably don't have a minute to spare. Like many people, you're eager to find ways to get the most done in the least amount of time. That helps explain why you find yourself answering e-mails in the grocery store checkout line and eating in the car while shuttling between activities.

Lack of time may also be to blame for the fact that financial tasks all too often fall to the bottom of your to-do list. According to government time-use studies, the average American rarely gets to money-management chores; those who do will spend a scant 15 minutes a day on them.
Granted, it's not just time that get's in the way. Many financial projects can seem overwhelming because of the sheer number of choices (which investment is best out of the thousands available? which credit card? which cable provider?). Studies show that when people are presented with too many possibilities, they can become paralyzed, a phenomenon known in social science circles as the paradox of choice. Carnegie Mellon economist George Loewenstein, who studies consumer behavior, explains that people do nothing because they're afraid of doing the wrong thing. But as Baltimore financial planner Tim Maurer notes, "Inaction is a decision too--and ordinarily not a good one."
Fortunately, you don't need more than a coffee break, a lunch hour, or a Saturday morning to make some smart moves with your money--moves that can cut your expenses, boost your savings, and protect your family's finances. "The key to meeting long-term goals is to break them into a short-term steps that are easier to accomplish," says Loewenstein. Turn the page for a dozen small steps with big payoff, whether you have 15 minutes or a few hours to spare.

Get on track for retirement. Yes, you really can devise a smart savings plan for retirement in just a quarter of an hour. The potential reward is huge: A survey by banking giant HSBC found that people who have even a rudimentary plan for reaching retirement goals are ending up with up to three times as much money as those without one.
Step One: Figure out your monthly savings rate at T. Rowe Price's Retirement Income Calculator (troweprice.com) Time needed: five minutes.
Step Two: Coming up short? Use the remaining 10 minutes to pump up your 401(k) contributions on your plan's website. If you can't put away as much as the calculator recommends, committ to automatically increasing the amount you're saving at the time of your raise; half of large employers offer this feature, according to Aon Hewitt.

Target your Savings. Want to save money for a rainy or sunny vacation week but never have enough leftover cash to stash for these goals? Have the money taken directly from your paycheck, so you'll never miss it. Inflation-Proof Your Portfolio: how you can craft an investment plan that keeps pace

   Short-Term signs of inflation are easy to spot, from the higher tab to fill the tank at the gas pump to a noticeably beefier grocery bill for the same food you bought two weeks ago. Yet, while the weekly toll of inflation on your household budget is easy to track, the steady rise of prices exacts less visible but devastating long-term damage on your portfolio. The reason: Even relatively mild inflation over time can cut into the return on your retirement savings. In real terms that means money you have accumulated won't buy as much as it does now. In other words, you could come up short paying for the lifestyle that you've plotted 10 to 20 years in the future.
   Between the year 2000 to April 2011, inflation has been modest--hovering mostly around a 1.5% to 3.6% rate of annual price increases as measured by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Even though there was a spike in July of 2008, negative rates or mild deflation were recorded for several months in 2009. Even so, the cumulative rate of inflation for the entire period from January 2000 to April 2011 would be 33.2%. In real terms, $3,000 in household expenses at the beginning of the millenium would now cost you nearly $4,000 to cover.
   Valerie Andrews, 51, had to consider that shift two years ago when she decided to step down from her accounts receivable position at an industrial supply company in Atlanta, Georgia. Andrews had salted away a sizable amount in her retirement savings around the time her firm offered a severance package. She consulted a financial planner, Fred O'Neal, and figured she could amass $500,000 in total with the money her company was presenting to early retirees. Andrews saw it as an opportunity to expand the personal printing company she operated out of her home, Val's Valuables, and to travel to see relatives across the country. "I've wanted to pursue personalized printing for years," says Andrews. "I worked at printing companies part time to learn as much as I could and now I can do a lot of things: marketing fliers, business cards, invitations, graduation mementos, and wedding pictures."
   The key, says O'Neal, who works for the brokerage firm Edward Jones, was to give Andrews savings enough kick to keep up with price increases. His answer: Allocate 60% of Andrews' portfolio in equity funds that can help her benefit from the stock market's track record of outpacing inflation over time.
   Consider these strategies to help inflation-proof your investments:
Engage in Portfolio allocation. Morningstar's Director of Personal Finance Christine Benz says it's important to analyze the mix of stocks (or equity mutual funds), bonds (or fixed-income mutual funds), and cash among your holdings. "You have to make sure you have a position in stocks to outpace inflation--even in retirement", she points out. The old rule of thumb is to subtract your age from 100 in order to find a suitable percentage of stocks or equity funds for your retirement savings. "That's not a bad starting point but as key as age is, it isn't the sole determinant. You have to factor in your tolerance for risk and your own personal needs as well," adds Benz.
   Invest in fixed-income investments that keep up with inflation. Bonds typically pay investors a set rate of interest. For that reason, fixed-income investments can be particularly vulnerable to inflation over time. Low-risk Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities or TIPS and I-bonds' returns, however are linked to the inflations rate to ensure a real return on your investment. Benz maintains your TIPS holding should depend on the size of your portfolio. "It's possible that someone in retirement might hold 20% to 30% of his or her bond portfolio in TIPS with the explicit goal of protecting against inflation--further out from retirement would probably require a lower percentage."
   Include commodities and real estate as part of your asset mix. Likw stocks, commodities and commercial real estate have proven track records to keep up with inflation. Raw materials and natural resources-corn, oil, and gold-tend to rise in price when inflation heats up. In the case of real estate, landlords are able to adjust rents for ofices and commercial space when prices are on the rise. One caveat: individual commodities and real estate prices can be very volatile. The best strategy is to add a bit--5% to 10%--to your portfolio through diversified ETFs or mutual funds that hold a varied portfolio spread among many holdings-James A Anderson

Lose the Last 10 Pounds - six rules, six weeks-and really not that painful!

1. Eat a little less everyday: to eat 200 less calories-about 20 potato chips-figure out how much food you need to sustain your current weight by downloading an app like MyNetDiary or visiting sites, like caloriecount.com with calculators that compute daily requirements. Check it out!
2. Boring Diets are Better: the majority of successful dieters eat fewer types of foods than the average person. 3. Prioritize Protein: the average adult male gets 16% of his daily calories from protein. Try to bump that up to 30%. 4. Target the 500-calorie Burn: studies suggest that people are more likely to exercise regularly if they have a specific goal in mind when working out. 5. Lift Weights like a Bodybuilder: a common weight-loss mistake is to prioritize aerobic exercise over weightlifting. "Weightlifting increases lean body mass, which increases lean body mass, which increases metabolism and the number of calories your body can burn". 6. Never sit more than 30 Minutes: it's not enough to exercise more, you also have to sit less. Research suggests that the more people sit, the fatter they are, regardless of exercise. For the next 6 weeks, don't sit for more than 30 minutes at a time. Set an alarm, and if you've been sitting for more than that, get up to make calls on your mobile, or to walk to talk to a colleague instead of emailing.

Until then, here are steps you can take to prevent a collector from contacting you this way.
1. Only let friends see your information: Remove all "friends of friends" options. Also, only let friends see your contact information.
2. Don't accept friend requests from people you don't know: Sometimes a debt collector will use a fake name to hide his or her identity. If you know the person making the request, ignore it.
3. Remove yourself from Facebook searches: Deactivating the option that allows everyone to search for your profile prevents it from appearing in an internet search.
4. Tell the collector to Stop: If collectors are questioning your friends and family, write a letter telling them to stop all contact.

Money In The Bank -- Raymond Stewart, founder and chief investment officer of RASARA Strategies, picks three banking stocks destined to lead the sector's resurgence.

1. New York Community Bancorp (NYB) is a bank holding company that operates more than 240 branches in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Florida and Arizona. It also holds a commercial bank that operates in the New York metropolitan area. The $7.5 billion market cap bank has run a solid ship during the financial crisis and after. Stewart notes that NYB managed to maintain its dividend throughout the entire crisis, when many banks were cutting theirs altogether. "They're considered one of the darlings of income-based mutual funds because of their solid yield," Stewart points out. He says NYB is compelling not only for a generous 6% yield, but also for the solid credit quality of its loan portfolio--factors he feels could push the stock to about $20 a share in the next 12 to 18 months. U.S. Bancorp (USB) is a Minneapolis-based national financial institution that engages variously in credit card services, merchant and ATM processing, mortgage banking, insurance, brokerage, and leasing throughout the U.S. The company has a $50 billion market capitalization. Stewart like's the bank's recent decision to pay 50 cents per share dividend and it plans for a 50 million share buyback. These tailwinds could push a 15% appreciation in USB's mid-$20s stock price over the next 12 to 18 months. He says USB may also be on the lookout for acquisitions in the near future; rumors have circulated that the bank might be eyeing Royal Bank of Canada's operations in the Southeast, for example. 3. Intervest Bancshares (IBCA) the New York City-based commerical and consumer banking service corporation, is a somewhat more speculative play - but one with a large potential upside. The money manager says an $8.80 book value per share is a far cry from the bank's stock price. That's reason enough for a potential climb to $4 to $5 a share in the next 12 to 18 months. Intervest did take a hit in 2009, when the small firm with $2.4 billion in assets and a $52 million market cap saw loan problems slash away at its pre-crisis $26 book value. If IBCA makes it through the 2011 first quarter with no surprises from its real estate and consumer lending businesses, the stock should be on its way to $4 over the next 12 to 18 months. Go Ahead - Get Out Of Town. But First Check Out These 10 Smart Strategies for Making a Less Costly Escape.

1) Lift off from a smaller airport: You can reap significant savings if you're willing to put up with a bit of inconvenience. Often you can snag a better deal on airline tickets if you bypass the majors and fly out of a regional airport instead. At press time, Real Simple found that it was $50 cheaper to fly to New York City from the Akron-Canton Airport than from the Cleveland hub. Use the search feature on the easy-to-navigate Kayak.com to compare airpares near you. But bear in mind-prices at the pump, the cost of driving to a more remote airport could wipe out some of your savings. Go to FreeCostCalculator.com, run by AAA, to estimate your outlay on gasoline.

2) Check a Bag for $0: Baggage fees have become a massive profit center for airlines: In 2010 the industry raked in more than $2.5 billion in these charges. But two airlines will let you check bags for free: JetBlue Airways allows one bag per passenger; Southwest Airlines permits two. Fly on them whenever possible and you'll save $50 or more round-trip per passenger. If those airlines don't suit your plans, sign up for a credit card with travel perks: Delta Air Lines waives one baggage fee per flight for customers who use its American Express Skymiles credit card, and Continental Airlines allows two free checked bags per traveler when the flight is booked on its Chase Presidential Plus card. Also, see if your hotel refunds baggage fees. Kimpton hotles currently credits up to $25 toward each room on request, and the Inter-continental Hotel Group offers a promotion for baggage-fee reimbursements from time to time, says Anne Banas, the executive editor of the travel site SmarterTravel.com

3) Find hidden hotel freebies: Room prices are down from their peak--averaging $99 a night as of this past February, compared with a high of $109 a night in 2008, according to the data firm, STR. But a' la carte fees, for everything from internet access (about $10 to $15 daily) to parking (about $20 a night or more) can cause sticker shock when it's time to pay the bill. Go to www.priceline.com/freebies to search for hotels that provide guests with complimentary breakfast, parking, or credits toward spa treatments or rounds of golf. And check out wififreespot.com, which lists hotle chains, such as Hollywood Suite by Hilton & Hyatt Place, that offer Wi-Fi on the house.

4) Cruise from a port closer to home: Until a few years ago, many vacationers had to fly to Miami or Orlando to hop on a cruise. No longer: Several companies, including Norwegian Cruise Line & Royal Carribean International, now set sail from ports located near large population centers around the country, such as New York City; Seattle; Galveston, Texas, Charleston, South Carolina; and Baltimore. And if you live near one of those locations, that can save you a bundle. Case in point: As of mid-April, taking a Carnival Cruise Lines trip directly from Charleston to the Bahamas cost $569 less than flying from Charleston to Miami, staying one night in a hotel, and departing the next day. The only drawback? "It takes longer for the ship to reach the destination, so you spend more time on the boat," says Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor-in-chief of the review site CruiseCritic.com. "But for most people that's preferable to filling time in airport."

5) Get the cheapest possible set of wheels: Prices for loaner vehicles fluctuate constantly, but not many travelers take the time to recheck rates after booking, even though there's no fee to cancel or change a reservation with any major car-rental company. To make this task easier, book with AutoSlash.com, a site that continues to check prices (on both domestic and foreign reservations) until your pickup date. If it finds a lower rate, you are automatically rebooked for free, and the new confirmation details are sent to your in-box. For a recent weeklong car rental in Los Angeles that originally cost $227, AutoSlash rebooked the reservation twice, reducing the price by $19. It also offered a free upgrade from a compact to a midsize car.

6) Use Bing's price predictor: Who hasn't read about a major fare sale the day after putting down a nonrefundable deposit on a reservation?(Ouch). Bing.com/travel helps you decide when to pull the trigger. After you put in your desired flight itinerary, the site tells you whether to buy your ticket now, or wait, based on historical fare data and price trends. (The site claims to have a 75% accuracy rate, which independent experts don't dispute) You can use Bing's "rate indicator" to shop for hotel rooms, too. It tells you whether a current price is a "deal", an "average rate", or "not a deal".

7) Follow Twitter sales: Twitter has become 'the' place for travel companies to announce sales that seem too good to be true--but aren't. Followers get first dibs on fare cuts before they go viral on the Wed. The specials are often for last-minute getaways. A recent one advertised tickets on Spirit Airlines (@SpiritAirlines) from Washington, DC to Fort Lauderdale, FLA, for just $54 each way. JetBlue Airways (@JetBlue) also offers noteworthy deals. The boutique-hotel specialist Quikbook (@Quikbook) is another good source, informing followers of discounts of up to 40% at independent hotels in major U.S. cities, such as Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles and Chicago's Peninsula Hotel.

8) Look for overseas discount carriers: Flights by low-cost foreign airlines, (such as Easyjet, based in the United Kingdom) don't show up on Expedia.com or Orbitz.com. But you can still take advantage of their rock-bottom prices: Book a ticket to a hub like Paris or Rome on a major carrier, then use Skyscanner.com or Momondo.com to reserve seats on a low-fare airline if you're headed to a smaller city, like Copenhagen or Nice. "These tickets can be ridiculously cheap. My husband recently flew from London to Girona, Spain, for less than $20 one way", says Pauline Frommer, the creator of Pauline Frommer Guides travel books.

9) Don't get dinged by credit-card fees: Many banks add a 3% foreign-transaction surcharge to the total cost of your purchase when you use a credit card abroad. But you can find ways around this charge by signing up for a credit card that waves the fee. Capital One does not assess the fee on any of its cards, and American Express has dropped the fee on its platinum card. Citi has followed suit on its Thank You Premier and Prestige lines, and Chase waives it on cards issued with British Airways, Hyatt, Continental Airlines, and United Airlines, among others. You might also avoid ATM charges by calling your bank before you travel and asking if it has any financial partners at your destinations.

10) Invite yourself to private hotel sales: Lately more and more premium hotels are offering discounts on rooms via members-only websites. Some of the "deals", however, aren't much different from what's being offered on the hotel's own websites. But two sites--Jetsetter.com and TripAlertz.com--make good on their promise to give users access to exclusive bargains. Recently you could get a room at the Vintage Inn, in Yountville, CA for $285 a night instead of $405, or stay at the Benson Hotel in Portland,Oregon, for $100 a night instead of $159. Three Upstarts Worth Trying

BREUKELEN: my informal focus group was evenly divided between gin lovers and gin agnostics, and the latter uniformly flipped for this New York spirit. To be honest, I bought this gin almost as a gag -- ph, great, some Brooklyn hipsters must have gotten their mitts on a still -- but it's a powerful contender. Thin, sweet, and tasting strongly of anise, it reminded some of grappa and others of sake. It's easily the most sippable gin I've ever had.
Best In: A G&T with a strong, lemony tonic like Fever-Tree

CITADELLE RESERVE: was on the opposite end of the spectrum. Aged in oak casks, which is unusual for gin nowadays, it's instantly distinguished by a yellowish hue. Citadelle, distilled in France, is a gin fanatic's gin: it won't turn any novices. My friends found it nearly undrinkable straight -- byt tamed with a splash of Dolin's dry vermouth in a martini, it immediately behaved much better.
Best In: An old school, honest-to-goodness martini with a lemon twist (no olive for this one)

AVIATION: is a smooth, citrusy gin made in Portland, Oregon. It's unsurprisingly terrific in its namesake cocktail, but it's easy to sip as well. When I mixed it with Fever-Tree tonic water, the resulting G&T had a strong and interesting whiff of fennel. Another great gin in this family is 'Greylock', distilled in Massachusetts and boasting an added smokiness.
Best In: The Aviation cocktail, of course, served martini-style with maraschino and lemon juice.

FACE TIME SELLS! - Analysts from eMarketer are forecasting that Facebook's display advertising revenues will jump nearly 81% this year, easily overtaking Yahoo for command of the online ad universe. That's not to say that Yahoo's display revenues are going away, either. The company stands to post a 16.4% gain of its own to bring in $1.65 billion in display earnings. The Facebook's unstoppable trajectory will allow it to grab 21.6%($2.19billion)of all U.S. display ad dollars this year-up from 13.6% of the market last year and 7.3% in 2009. Google, meanwhile, is also expected to overtake Yahoo and settle into the second position with 16.7% of the market in 2011.

ANALYZE THIS! - Social media marketing and measurement has become a necessity for success on the Web, forcing many companies to expand their staffs, outsource to expensive firms or both. HootSuite has been an effective and affordable option for many for many online businesses in the short time the space has existed, and the recent launch of a new analytic platform has been welcomed by more than a million users. Updates to the Web-based dashboard include a brand new interface, much-improved reporting capabilities and new metrics that allow for deeper monitoring of Twitter, Facebook, Google and other services. The demand for social media management and analytics tools is rapidly approaching the supply, and companies such as HootSuite, Radian6, Involver and Sprout Social are doing their best to keep up.

THE EXPRESS LANE! - According to a recent Ipsos Public Affairs report, 83% of e-commerce merchants say their sales have increased since offering Express Checkout from PayPal. Of the online retailers that are able to track their revenues, sales have increased an average of 18% since adding the service. Among that group, 84% of the merchants said that their sales increased within the first three months or longer after offering PayPal's service, while 8% said it took four to six months to longer to notice an increase in sales. Express Checkout is PayPal's one-stop payment option intended to streamline the checkout process for online shoppers, similar to the ordering options now offered by Amazon and Google Checkout.

APP STORES GALORE! - We wrote here last month about the enormous potential for revenues in mobile apps, estimated by Forrester to reach $38 billion by 2005. Now Opera Software and Appia have announced the opening of a new mobile apps store for the more than 100 million Opera users. Given the excitement surrounding the market, this may indicate a trend in which independent app stores start competing with Apple's App Store and Google's updated and much-improved Android App Market for attention not only from consumers but also developers. In addition to Opera and Appia, Verizon and Amazon have each recently launched their own app stores and others include GetJar amd AppBrain.

ON SALE (RIGHT) NOW! - The much-anticipated convergence of the "daily deal" platforms with location-aware mobile services finally appears to be gaining some traction. Called Instant Deals by LivingSocial, Reward Alerts by Loopt and ShopAlerts by AT&T, to name a few, the goal of each new service is to lure mobile users into brick-and-mortar stores by sending them real-time updates about time-sensitive deals taking place in their current locations. A restaurant that is experiencing a slow lunch rush, for instance, can attract customers already in the area by creating an instant special and sending out an alert. It presents an ideal marriage between local and mobile commerce, and it will be worth watching as dozens of these programs roll out across the U.S.

CHECK IT OUT! - Mobile users "checking in" to establishments through services such as Foursquare, Gowalla, Facebook Places and Google Places has proved to be a powerful marketing tool for local merchants, but a new feature from Bizzy puts the emphasis on checking out. The mobile service for personalized business recommendations recently updated its iPhone and Android apps with the new feature that allows users to check out of a business by leaving an emoticon-style description of the experience. The checkout process acts as a future recommendation for friends, as in "Love it", or a negative review such as "No Thx".

Next For YouTube - Google's announcement in March that it was acquiring Next New Networks has created speculation about YouTube forging into the next dimension of Web video production and programming. Rather than creating it own original content, however, Google's focus seems to be on improving the existing platform that has become so valuable for millions of online businesses. The acquisition has spurred a new program called YouTube Next that will leverage the expertise gained in the partnership by offering training in video production and audience development. The next few months promise to reveal plenty about Google's long-range plans for YouTube and the future marketing value it will continue to provide for Web professionals.

bing's Been Busy - Microsoft's search engine Bing was the subject of several announcements in March that will impact countless businesses on the Web. Most recently, Bing confirmed the launch of its instant search feature that it had been promising since the arrival of Google Instant last fall. Prior to that a partnership between the search engine and travel search aggregator Kayak was announced, and jus t hours before that was Bing's entry into the daily deals space via a partnership with another aggregator, The Dealmap. Perhaps most interesting is the fact that Microsoft has opted for outside technologies to drive Bing in the local deals and travel search categories.

Four for Four - MasterCard has reported that February was the fourth straight month to see a double-digit, year-to-year online spending increase. Web shoppers spent $13.8 billion during the month, marking a 13.2-percent increase from last February and up from the $13.1 billion spent in January 2011. Consumers spent more online apparel was the biggest gainer with a 15-percent increase. What is good news for the e-commerce industry may not be a sure sign of an economic recovery, however. MasterCard attributes much of the boost in online spending to rising gas prices.

Got Widgets? - They come in just about every size, shape and color and they are fast becoming one of the most common sights on the Web. That's according to a company called Lijit, which develops widgets and recently released a study tracking their deployment. Defined in the report as "any regularly occuring functionality on a website powered by an external service, voluntarily installed by the site owner and powered by Flash or Javascript", most users know them as little buttons that ask them to "add this", "share this", Tweet this of Like that. Social media widget adoption has soared by 80% in the past year, and those for Twitter & Facebook alone have nearly doubled--climbing from 6.96% overall usage to 11.86 percent.

Paid Search - As a result of all of the twists and turns the search industry has endured over the past year, the value that Web companies put on SEOs has never been higher. That's according to the data that Crandall Associates released in the 2011 edition of the annual Online Marketing Salary Guide, which reports an increase of 17.5% for average starting salaries in the search field. Starting salaries in the U.S. have gone up to $59,100 from $50,300, while the average salary has reached $75,000 and high-end salaries climbed 2.6% to $87,300. E-commerce directors will earn the highest Web salaries overall in 2011, but the rise from last year was fractional.
